Annual Appeal

This fall marks a special birthday for The Family Center: CELEBRATE 9!! Over the past nine years, we have worked hard to bring you accessible, quality, community-based programming. We have only been able to do this because of the strong community support received from individual donors, family foundations, organizations, businesses and you, our "friends of The Family Center". Show your support of our local efforts to strengthen families with a donation today! The Family Center is the place parents turn to when they ask:

  • Am I doing everything right for my newborn?
  • Does my toddler seem withdrawn for a reason?
  • Can I be sure my child is ready to start kindergarten?
  • Is my teen more sad than normal?
  • How can I protect my children online?
  • What challenges will my family face as our high school student prepares for college?

The Family Center responds with enrichment programs like:

  • College: Demystifying the College Process. A panel of experts to address questions from the audience.
  • Are Your Kids at Risk? Teen Alcohol and Drug Trends. A discussion provided by police, psychologists and a life coach on substance use awareness and prevention.
  • Eliminate Stress at Home and in Your Life
  • Kindergarten: Get Ready!! presentation clarifies what kids need academically, socially and emotionally to be prepared for school.
  • Ask the Experts 2010 series of presentations with Beaumont Hospital professionals on: Toilet Training, Forty Developmental Assets, Behavior Management, Assessing and Addressing Autism and other Spectrum Disorders.
  • Additional information via our resources: Web site, DVDs, Ask the Experts columns and Navigating the Adolescent Years: A Road Map guidebook.

Our goal for CELEBRATE 9!! is to raise $90,000 over the next year to help continue and enhance the work of The Family Center.

NINE Reasons to Support The Family Center:

  1. The Family Center serves as the community's centralized hub for information, referral and resources for both families and professionals.
  2.  The Family Center, with 1 full-time director and a part-time office manager, relies on the active involvement of over 100 volunteers dedicated to helping fulfi ll its mission.
  3. The Family Center is a collaborative organization with strong ties with the school districts, PTOs, hospitals, school and community health professionals, and other nonprofits.
  4. In the past year, The Family Center website www.familycenterweb.org was redesigned and features numerous resources, calendar of events, Association of Professionals online resource directory, Ask the Experts articles, newsletters, polls and much more!
  5. The Family Center's Association of Professionals and Ask the Experts features over 140 local experts in the fields of autism, adoption, behavior management, substance use, preparation for successful transitions into kindergarten through college, etc.
  6. Every week The Family Center's Ask the Experts column is published in the Grosse Pointe News and posted on our website.
  7. 842 kids and 684 adults representing 630 families attended The Family Center's weekly Play Central drop-in open play group sessions during last winter. Play Central offers an opportunity for toddlers to play with their peers and for parents and caregivers to connect with other parenting adults.
  8. Last year, The Family Center facilitated 15 enrichment programs on a variety of topics relating to youth issues (infancy through college years). More than 1,300 parents, grandparents, caregivers and professionals attended Family Center events and programs last year. Topics included: depression and suicide, nutrition, sports medicine, adjustment to parenthood and childhood illnesses.
  9. The Family Center is a 501(c) 3 independent nonprofi t organization. Personal donations, gifts from family foundations and organizations are our primary source of funding.

With challenging times for all of us, our services will be depended upon more than ever. Please join us in contributing generously this year!
